That's the way the font is designed. They're not 1s.

I find getting trophies for everything highly unfair because they reward the lower performing people to encourage them and the higher performing people get gypped.

It's not even that they give trophies to everyone. That's fine. But oftentimes the winners are discouraged from celebrating, as that would take away from those who didn't win... I mean, are we really such a culture that everyone has to be equal, and those who prosper are shamed?

That culture you described, if made into a form of economy and government would be communism.

No. It's not exactly the same principle. But anyways the real reason that kids are being treated this way are psycho ass parents. The type who sur little league when coach makes the kids run laps. They think their kids are fucking holy.

Spanking has negative effects on children's development. I agree that trophies are a bit much, but the idea of being rewarded just for effort is actually very good for children. Verbal praise is one of the best ways to reinforce positive behaviour. Edit: Not really sure what all the down votes are for. Seriously, pick up a child development book before forming your opinions. Or just start with a Google search.

I've was spanked when I was a kid, and it helped me mature way more than verbal punishment, or time out. Sure, I didn't get spanked for everything, but if I DID get spanked, I knew not to do that shit again.

Guys, you can disagree with me all you like; it won't change the research. Just because you were spanked and turned out fine, doesn't mean that it's a good practice. Positive reinforcement of good behaviour has a stronger impact than punishment.

I was spanked and did NOT turn out fine. That shit can end right here and now along with the participation trophy. You wanna reward kids? How about smaller rewards for more achievable goals? Then they have to actually accomplish something but it's not a miracle when they manage it. Everyone still gets a "trophy", but no one got it just for breathing.

Spanking and rewards aren't inherently bad or good. It depends on their usage.

Rewards for just showing up are bad. It makes people think they deserve what ever they want without working for it.

One of my parents spanked me as a child. The other told me hard truths, but never laid a finger on me. I like the second (my dad) much more.

I agre with partychick. I was spanked. Not all the time but when I needed it and I'm thankful now that I've grown up that I was. I realized I'd never do what I was doing again. I see so many kids that should get spanked today but instead are just talked to be total brats.

I know i will probably get downvoted for pointing out reality and common sense again (which seems to happen to me all the time here), but my philosophy in life is everything in moderation so hear me out: spank children, but not every time they slightly mess up. Teach them the hard truths about life like the guest's parent. And also reward for things they do that actually deserve a reward, but dont reward them for everything. The best thing to do is balance it all out. Im only fifthteen, and i am probably one of the most respectful people out there because that is what my parents did for me.

Hi, I'm just wondering (you guys seem to know what you're talking about), is spanking mainly an American thing? As far as I'm aware, it's not that common in the UK.

I was spanked in India. I would disagree with it mainly being an American thing

Thank you for answering :) I'm surprised its so common in other countries, I never really knew it was done as a common practice for some, so to me it seems quite alien, and an abusive, rough method (that's just my outsider/observer view and opinion on it, not any form of insult or put-down at anyone who spanks/was spanked).
