Aww, that's so nice! When my little sisters kitten died after she was spayed, she had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, we got a hand written letter, and the vet, who cried while telling my ten year old sister, called us a week later, arranged for us to adopt another cat without a fee.
Aww. That's really sweet. I've had dogs die and I would cry and cry. The last time I was a lot younger though and now that I'm older if my dog dies I think I'll be depressed for a really long time.
I fear the day when my baby girl is going to die. :'( She is an amazing dog who is my best friend. She's loved me through my good times and bad, let me yell at her and the curl up and cry into her coat. She always tries to cheer me up when I cry by barking, jumping around, crying with me and howling. We were raised together. We found her when I was 4 or 5-ish, and we've been best friends sense. She's always protected me, sometimes more than she should of. Once when I was little I fell and skinned my knee and I was bleeding pretty bad so my mom scooped me up and carried me inside while I was wailing and my dog bit her thinking she hurt me. She's calmed me when I've been having anxiety attacks by just being her and doing tricks for me afterwards so I can relax. To anyone thinking of getting a dog, get one. They're hard work to train, but it's worth it because the love and friendship they give is like no other.
When my guinea pig died at the vet several years ago, the entire staff signed a card and sent us back a little plaster "handprint" with her name and date of death on the back.

My rat died not too long ago :( His name was Andy Samberg.
Our old vet did that for two of our dogs. Wonderful keepsake. Remember, though our faithful dogs are only with us for a part of our lives to them we are their whole world, I sure you made it a good one.
Sorry to hear that, it's never easy to lose the animals in our lives.
