I think she made him gay for publicity. She never once made any indication that he was gay in the seven book series.
I do love J.K Rowling though.

Maybe Alec Lightwood from the Mortal Instruments series? I'm not very sure about that though. There's not a lot of books/movies/TV shows that don't revolve around a gay character's life.
