Little kids prefer a McD's hamburger to a ribeye steak, so somewhere along the line our palates change. Although I like a side of shrimp with a steak main dish, I still don't care for some things the cognoscenti rave about as the peak of meal perfection--lobster, foie gras, escargot.

Not mac and cheese, though. We always like that.

Places like that attract people who are looking for an other-worldly experience, and are open to encounters with aliens, spirits or whatever. So, more visits feed the legend with the wild stories and nobody wants to hear the "I went there and nothing happened" stories.

Or, maybe there's a high concentration of some kind of mushroom that sends its spores into the air.

That's great that the gorillas benefited from the stock churning that occurred with GameStop. But, there was more to it than "individuals against Wall Street."

It looks like the Reddit stuff was started by a guy running a hedge fund who noticed other HFs were selling short GME. By getting lots of individuals to temporarily drive GME up, it clobbered the other hedge funds and he made a ton for his own, then the individual small investors made out well if they got in early or lost big if they got in at the wrong time.

Plus, I shouldn't say "investors" but "speculators." It's like a year ago when Hertz announced their impending bankruptcy, and the stock went up because some people thought that Hertz might be able to avoid bankruptcy. Then others noticed the stock going up, and bought in figuring still others would do the same and even though it would become worthless in a week there were several days to hope for an even greater fool to bid the price higher and take on the crash.

That's OK for alpha and beta radiation because they're particles, but gamma radiation is electromagnetic waves.

One thing I don't get: Who *made* people take out enormous college loans to attend their expensive dream school to major in something that nobody will pay you to do?
I know plenty of people who would have loved to go to, say, Notre Dame or DePaul, but couldn't swing it financially so they attended really good state schools. They majored in things that have an economic future. So, when someone racks up $100K in debt (including some expensive spring break trips) to attend a private college and major in Modern Dance Theory or Gender Studies, and they want it to be paid for by taxing the ones who were more responsible in the choices (or even got a non-college job), I just don't get it.

At least one difference: Your running partner doesn't say "Parkour me...parkour Me!" while you guys are jumping off handrails and benches and stuff.

Or another way to look at it: If you try to take the ~135 engineering credit hours in the same four years that L&S majors take 120 credits, you're not going to be able to put 100% into every assignment in every class. So, some will be "good enough" (B-, C+, solid B?) even though you might have been a "curve wrecker" in high school. Maybe the required "breadth of knowledge" classes in public speaking, sociology and global studies will kill your GPA. Even if public speaking helps you give presentations later on, you might compare unfavorably with the pre-law and poli sci students. Maybe the global studies prof prefers his own opinion regurgitated back at him to competent independent thought...but it took you a semester (and bad grade) to discover that.
Same as in your "real" job...some people reward you for good results, but others have an agenda.

Something to think about: If you're famous and everyone knows you're rich, people will come out of the woodwork to "borrow" money, or ask you to invest in their "can't miss" startup or enormous money sink but "it's for a good cause." If you're adored worldwide, everybody will be pestering you for autographs, pictures or a few moments of your time...and those few moments times thousands of people extend into your whole day. Paparazzi follow you perpetually hoping to catch you picking your nose or scratching your butt or saying something to a fan that they can take out of context to make you look mean/selfish/whatever.

But if you're rich and *not* famous or adored worldwide, your time is nearly 100% your own, and you have few restrictions on what you can do thanks to having great resources.

One thing that's cool is when people take that message to heart, and create/support a Rescue Mission for the homeless, donate food and money to food banks, work on Habitat for Humanity or the equivalent to build and repair homes, etc.
What I *don't* get is people using Bible quotes to support the compelling of *other* people to support causes that they themselves don't. It's quite easy, and very fulfilling, to demand the confiscation of others' property to support things that seem good but apparently not good enough for those people to spend their own money and time on.
