Not to forget that xbox also had backwards compatible and is slowly updating titles to have better performance when played on the Xbox one/Xbox one X

Everyone is a little racist on the inside, it's just a matter of what triggers it
Since they started charging players to play online they had less security breaches and improved connection.
Xbox had a large audience early 2000's, they charged.
Playstation got an increase in players late 2000's. Attacks went up and PSN was down multiple times within every few months.
Nintendo recently started charging because DS sales and Switch sales are skyrocketing.

It's only reasonable for them to begin charging so they can find the people and improve security.
