Based on the non-resident Indians in USA or Immigrants , they always put up with this stereotype. I personally never faced it, not in my near 3 yr stay in USA

No, they objected because he was set on general stereotypes associated to the average Indian gas station owner or bodega etc. The reasoning was that when Apu was launched there weren't many Indians portrayed in mainstream media in USA, hence, causing to take Apu as a default racial stereotype and many Indians encountering casual racism because of it. Even though lot has changed now and objecting to it is of no use.
