Depression can stem from personal distress. Here, by the person's description, was suicidal and had no self care, once he saw hope in form a job, it changed.

I know a lot of our appearance is based on genetics, but we can work on our appearance. For e.g., for the person on right can work on his body by regularly exercising, he can work on his bald patch by either using a high quality toupee($$$), shaving his head($) or going for hair weaving($$$$$). He could start working on his grooming skills, get some dental work (expensive, I know) or just maintain better dental habits. It's not impossible to maintain a better version of yourself, it just depends on how much time, money and work you are willing to put-- like on almost anything in life.
