I would think that, overall, the less dirt you leave in the bed, the better.

Whatever leaves the maximum surface area directly exposed is best. More surface area that has your sweat (and dead skin aka. mite food) on it is exposed to be dried out if it is left messy. Although ideally speaking, you should flip the comforter and sheets over ie. make the bed "upside down".

My dog knows to stay the hell out of my bed lest he wake me... I am VERY unpleasant when woken unexpectedly.

I disagree. We live in a quantum mechanical universe which means it is ultimately probabilistic/statistical rather than deterministic.
