Because isn't female more like something you would use for an animal instead of a person. For a person it's women/men, for an animal it's female/male. Why use female for women but just men for men?

Usually people say; ''What do you want to be when you grow up?'' Indicating what job they would like to have. In this case, the girl says ''give up'', because as a child, if you have unrealistic dreams, and then reality hits you, you ''give up'' on your dreams. However, they could also be implying that you give up on your dreams regardless of what they might be.
