You'd be surprised. As a psychologist, I hear it confused all the time. What made me post this, was a commentator on NPR calling a policy "somewhat schizophrenic" because it seemed to say two things at the same time. Mental health myths tend to piss me off.

These are all things that people find effective. It is also true that pets serve as a protective factor against suicide. Source: My Ph.D. In clinical psychology and current work with mood disorders and suicide prevention. {Sorry, when I see people casually talking about this stuff, I can turn into a bit of a dick. No offense meant. And yes, I know what I wrote sounds a bit arrogant :)} Though characterizing these as the "most" effective is not necessarily true.

Until you go to the dentist, you don't know what exactly is wrong and you don't pull the tooth out yourself. There are many causes of AND treatments for depressed mood (which does not necessarily equal depression). If you have a depressed mood or have lost interest in things you used to enjoy for longer than 2 weeks, get help. If you have thought of ways to kill yourself, get help. This isn't stuff to BS around with on the internet. It took 10 years of college to get my PhD in psychology. Most people (not talking about anyone specifically) who talk about the "facts" of mental illness on here don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

Would and have. More sharing than skipping, but also eating condiment sandwiches so as to be able afford dog food. A long time ago, thankfully.

Also textbook authors get paid and article authors don't. I do think textbook prices are ridiculous too. The problem is that there is almost no competition for textbooks. At this very moment, I have an article that only needs a few more hours of work, but I have zero motivation to work on it.

This is so great. It is totally ridiculous how hard it can be to get articles. What happens is when writing up research, the author ends up trying to get by with just reading abstracts. I know most people probably don't care, but the restriction of knowledge (especially since the journals are almost pure profit ) is such B.S.

No more glorifying disorders 29 comments

This is very true. As one who treats those with mental illness, I can unequivocally say that mental illness is not sexy, cool, or glamorous. It tears families, lives, and souls to pieces. I occasionally get young patients who almost seem to be acting in a caricature of someone with a mental health issue. It is frustrating, but sadly what I usually find underneath the facade is a deep emptiness and a desperate need to belong somewhere, even if it is to a diagnostic class. All too often it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
