Yup, though I think it was "only" weed. Also he had a lot more jobs and adventures than in the movie. He also was a boxer and highly intelligent in specific fields and became a world chess champion at one point. He also went to space and lived amongst cannibals I think.

She really wasn't that much of a bitch in the book. She wanted to stay with Forrest but he had a drug problem. She told him he needs to get it under control but he didn't and didn't really take her serious so she left him.
