A couple bad apples... you know I was going to say "ruin the bunch" but that isn't true in this case. To use a really wild metaphor, you could imagine the apples are in a funnel. You really want some apples, but upon closer inspection you find that some apples are at the bottom, and these apples are not only blocking the rest of the apples from getting to the bottom, but they're all wanting to be the only apples that get to the bottom, and all of them try to go down the funnel at once, and in that none of them can pass through. These apples are different types too. You have your granny smith's, your fujis, your honey-crisps, etc. There other apples of the same types above the apples blocking the way, but unlike the ones at the bottom they recognize that they need to work together. Every once in a while we need to reflect upon ourselves to make sure that we are not the apples at the bottom. I just realized that I wrote a paragraph personifying apples to explain religion.
