Is he an asshole for doing it? No.
Is he an asshole anyway? He acts it in public, but I don't know the guy in person, so I can't say.

Can I point some things out?
Yes, he's had loads of flak from haters.
Yes, it's wrong for people to call him a girl and want him dead.
Yes, being rich and famous doesn't mean he's happy.
Yes, just because he's a celebrity doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings.
BUT
Having hardships in your life doesn't give you the right to act the way he does. Especially when they're hardships he's earned through hard work. He acts like the world owes him something, which is odd since he's already "at the top", according to his fan base ( <- This is not meant to be taken insultingly, so don't be insulted. Easy as that.).

Plus, Illegal drift racing isn't THAT bad. It's breaking the law, and it's stupid and reckless, but out of all the crimes he could have been convicted for, it's relatively mild. Especially with his international incidents. I mainly say this because my cousin got charged with drift racing when I was younger. It was a stupid and wreckless move, but he did it because he was a-
