That's probably because he's supposed to be dressed as Quetzlcoatl - the Feathered Serpent. He was white skinned unlike most other deities, and refused the flesh and blood sacrifices the others did, instead asking for gifts of flowers and honey. Essentially he was the Aztec version of Jesus Christ.
