Just a thought: their gender is probably more of a touchy subject to them than it is to you. They've fought for their right to use it and I think you're correct; it means a lot more to them than it does to you. If someone accidentally called me a dude though I'm a cis chick I probably wouldn't fix the mistake, like you. It's different for everyone though.

Edit: Apparently I triggered some people enough for them to downvote me so here's an explanation. If we agree that transgender people deserve to be called their preferred gender, then we agree that gender is not necessarily linked to sex. This opens up the door for different genders that in no way are linked to sex, but it's a matter of opinion if you accept them or not. Which is fine; disagreements happen all the time. Sorry if my wording was rude.
