Marrying young is not the end of freedom 14 comments

Or maybe I am one. Dum dum duuum. Seriously though, whatever one can solve by exploding in anger, one can solve better by being rational. I expect people to make sense, and considering the centuries mankind spent studying everything, it's not much to ask.

Marriage doesn't remove much freedom; it's just a contract that gives you a few perks if you agree to some basic stuff, and some security should the couple grow apart.
Toxic partners remove freedom: the insecure, possessive, jealous or control freaks. My girlfriend is free to leave me at anytime, hang out with whoever she wants and do whatever she likes. The fact that we're still together after 5 years and never had a fight 'despite' her freedom is a great feeling. If I were limiting her opportunities to meet people, i.e. if I were jealous, I would not know whether she's with me by choice.

Android user here. Does Siri actually work as a user interface, or is it still mostly for fun?

Guest was so obviously trolling with that one. I know, I almost killed people on Reddit with a scientifically crafted incorrect sentence like he/she/it just did; in a post about grammar.

Then again, someone's got to make all these "made in China" products.

We do have family guy here. I'm wondering what's so special about Mormons in that case. I mean, banning prostitution is kind of dumb (as shown by this cartoon) but how does this relate to Mormonism at all? Just curious.

I live in a country where prostitution is legal and where Mormons don't matter (the Netherlands). Would someone explain what this is all about?

Strawberry isn't a molecule. For all I know, the left box lists the names of abundant molecules found in any strawberry. My tapwater is full of dihydrogen monoxide and that doesn't gross me out.

Pederasty is between a man and and adolescent boy. It's a one to one relationship between two males. It's not about a bunch of crayons of any colors, which I assume to represent kids of any.... genders? That's just weird.

I'm a hit at parties 1 comments

At least it's something to which they can still relate. My specialty is the modeling of electromagnetic interferences in the quasi-optical part of far-infrared/submillimetric telescopes. And a bit of high mass star formation. I avoid taking about my job at parties, most attendees are high school drop outs, it tends to awkwardize everything.

Help the bees 14 comments

I found a bee on my doorstep two weeks ago, it was exhausted but alive. I remembered this post, gave it a try. It's eerie how well it worked; in one minute it went from barely able to bend a knee in slow motion to flying off over the bushes. I know bees are tiny but there's no way it had the time to digest anything. Maybe it was just very thirsty.

Maybe. Or maybe it's cognitive dissonance. I don't know anyone who's both a parent and happier than I am. And I'm on antidepressants. Now, my experience is mere anecdotal evidence but this has been researched more seriously http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wray-herbert/joyful-parenthood-myth-cognitive-dissonance_b_816453.html

But to forget microscope, you also have to forget "micro" and "scope". How can one forget "micro"? It's pretty much Greek for "small", it's used all over the place. Strange.
