Yeah. That one still bugs me, but apparently "dice" is becoming acceptable now, according to whatever Google returns for "singular of dice". Friends with whom I play board games would regularly say "you roll one less dice because X". Grmbl fewer die grmbl. I'm French, they're British and American, how hard can it be?

They're circular because what other shapes would they have? Heptagons? That would take some explaining to do. The geometry if the effect follows the geometry of the causes. The magnetosheet discharges itself into the poles, so we've got two 'points' where stuff happens. Widen points and you've got circles. Circles is what you should expect from a bunch of charged particles following the magnetic lines of a dipole.
Buuuuuut, your question would have been stupid two decades ago. "Of course it's a circle!", because of dipole and shit. But look at Saturn; it's got an hexagonal polar "circle"-shaped storm. Turns out that standing waves matter. It may not affect auroras, but it's still pretty interesting to see something that's not circular happening at the poles of a planet.

It's kinda cute, in a special way. "Woo, Katy Perry wears latex", mutch edgy, very sexy. Now, take a second to see what latex fashion does these days. Google up VinNoir, for example.

Farmer in India brings along solar panel to charge phones for extra cash 8 comments

How big are the panels on those powerbanks? Also, this 15 W/m² assumes normal incidence; it's only half that on average if you don't track the sun but let the panel flat on the floor. Then there's a problem with heat: the efficiency of solar panels decreases when it gets warm; so if the panel is glued to the powerbank the heat may have difficulties dissipating. Finally, solar powerbanks are probably made from cheap crap.

Nope. Your "aw" is a diphthong, meaning a vowel that morphs into another vowel with time. The French "in" is not a diphthong; you can hold it indefinitely. But it's a nasal vowel with no equivalent in English. Languages are weird.

Quickly running some numbers. A square foot of solar panel can be expected to output 15 W. Assuming you convert the 12--15 V of the panel down the the 5 V required by USB, those 15 W can give you a current of 3 A. A "fast charger" outputs 2.1 A, so 3 is more than enough.

I would consider playing online with friends I already have IRL, like I did when my friends and I managed a Neverwinter Nights server in 2002--2004. I played Minecraft coop with my gf. I would love to play Empyrion in coop as well. But strangers, ew!

That's not what atheists say. There's a difference between "I don't believe in gods" and "I believe there are no gods". The vast majority of atheists says the former, which can be rephrased as "I am not convinced that gods exist". That doesn't mean they are convinced that gods do not exist. Likewise, do you believe that there is an even number of blades of grass in my garden? No? That doesn't mean that you believe that number to be odd: you aren't convinced one way or another. What would convince you? Evidence, we could count the blades of grass. What would convince an atheist of the existence of a god? Evidence. Faith is how believers justify their belief when evidence isn't strong enough. If there were good reasons to believe in a god we wouldn't need faith. Atheists reserve their judgement.

I don't know this feeling. What's going on? She gives him money back, so what? Also, cash is weird. I live in the Netherlands now, I don't think I used cash once over the past year. We can pay everything with our debit cards at no charge. Even for five cents, even vending machines, laundromats or public toilets.

Worse: the lines that delimit the scales of the pineapple are wrong. In the show, they're at more or less 45°, yielding a regular tiling of rhombuses. But in real life the scales aren't regularly tiled; they're pentagonal and their edges form lines that emerge from aunderlying distribution, which follows Fibonacci's sequence.

More subtle but as idiotic: "All that panic over the swine/bird flu is just fear mongering for the benefit of big pharma". Maybe said flu killed only 20 people *because* the World Health Organization successfully contained it.
