Blind Date With A Book 23 comments

Slaughterhouse 5 is about a man who is bounced around in time, experiencing different parts of his very unusual life. It takes you through war, a mental institutionalization, marriage, family life, abduction and probably more that I'm not remembering. The book follows the majority of his life, up to his death, and is presented as the main character (Billy) actually experiencing the events as opposed to having flashbacks. I've read it a few times and love it every time.

This is just so incredibly sad; it is an awful testament to just how well people can hide feeling such despair and hopelessness. Hopefully he's at peace now.

That was always terrible. Second only to being mean or nasty to her while in a bad mood and regretting it for ages once I calmed down. My poor mother frequently got the full force of my wrath for no real reason and I feel bad about it to this day.

Gentle showers on Black Friday would be lovely! It's either a freakish 70 degrees or a blizzard here around Thanksgiving, something smack in the middle (and appropriate for the season) would be nice for a change.

Oh no, not at all! We were just apart for an extended period, he was on a business trip so we couldn't see each other. He's since returned!

Did someone on this post hate you? I do find your research to be a little odd, though. I am a mother, I am 30, I am tattooed (not sure why you put the question mark there), and based on average clothing size for women in tut US I am well below the national average. I'm very sorry my lack of capitalization led you to feel compelled to do all that research, was there a point? I'm honestly kind of flummoxed about why you felt that it was necessary.

Lucifer, when you use the word what instead of how it changes the sentence, making the like at the end more grammatically correct. From a technical standpoint it's still incorrect, but from an every day usage standpoint it's considered perfectly acceptable. Plus you don't know what I look like. Or how I look. :-p

I'm being a bit of a grammar nazi, but there is no reason to end this kind of sentence with "looks like". Sometimes it's ok to end a sentence with a preposition, but in this case the "like" is completely unnecessary and grammatically incorrect for that reason. If English isn't your first language it's a totally ok mistake, but way too many native English speakers make this mistake.

Strict parents raise better kids 12 comments

How do you define strict? I'm considered a strict parent among my peers with children, but my daughter comes to me with everything. She openly tells her friends that I'm her best friend, but we have very clearly defined rules in our house.

I love all the positive comments so far, I needed a bit of positivity! Modern medicine is amazing, it always blows my mind. What I love about this picture though is how this kid is just looking like they're taking it in stride. Kids are such an incredible reminder that sometimes you have to take the life you have and just go with it.
Sometimes things suck, sometimes life is beautiful beyond description, but it's always worth riding it out.

I promise I'm in no way innocent! But it's kind of fun to counter innuendo filled comments with something totally innocuous. It makes me giggle a bit.

That's indescribably adorable. So I won't describe my feelings. But they're in direct correlation to the off the charts adorableness here.

He's a good boy that went from spending half his time outside, chasing rabbits and such, to strictly being an inside cat. The lack of hunting made him pack on some pounds, so we got a second cat to keep him busy and switched them both to good indoor cat food. Gotta take care of your tiny friends!

Average saturday morning with and without kids 9 comments

My daughter is a big time early bird, sleeping in is 7 am to her. Thankfully she's now old enough for me to let her do her own thing in the morning for a bit so I can sleep in a little later.
Other than the impromptu haircuts, I can't think of any major incidents we've ever had, although I'm sure they've happened. For the most part she's been an angel. The only major meltdown I can even recall was at the beginning of our great Segawa adventure, we got sent to an adult lab instead of pediatric and the phlebotomist had no idea how to draw a large volume of blood from a toddler. Even then, a sucker and handful of stickers cleared things up in seconds.
Some kids just have a way more mellow temperament than others I suppose.

My daughter was (and still is at 10) mostly a very cool kid. She's never given me much trouble, but damn did she give me a run for my money with the hair cutting! She did it 3 times total. Other than that I could never understand why people always complained about their toddlers.

And somewhere in there is the part where you get your kid to take a nap in their own room, and leave the baby monitor in there to make sure you know when she wakes up and manage to take an actual shower all by yourself. But when you get out you find your crazed 3 year old standing on the rolling desk chair giving herself a haircut with your pinking shears, in spite of the fact that absolutely no sound came from the monitor indicating that she was awake and your pinking shears were hidden in the back of a desk drawer. Said child will have managed to give herself a buzzcut with the scissors, and will remain bald on half her head indefinitely. Naturally this will happen the morning of her 3rd birthday party, so all her pictures will scream of your parental ineptitude.

Makes me feel good about life again 20 comments

No, it doesn't. But the whole thing was borderline for me at that point already. The guy was being awfully dismissive and made a number of other questionable statements but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. That statement cemented in my mind that he wasn't so much trying to disprove the teach our sons philosophy (and I agree that people should always exercise caution and not just assume that you can "teach"someone not to rape, I don't believe that's any kind of solution) as he was shifting blame. Maybe in certain instances a woman could have made better decisions, but at the end of the day rape is rape. Blaming the victim does nothing but minimize the magnitude of the situation.

Excellent! I sat here confused, then when I realized that I'd misread it I kind of laughed to myself about what an aging penguin might look like. I'm going to Google that when I get the time.
