Oil and water do not mix because oil is comprised of non-polar molecules while water is polar H2O molecules. Non-polar solutes cannot be dissolved in polar solvents. The difference in densities (water is heavier than oil) means the oil forms a layer above the water.
About the oceans mixing, I have no idea

I've given up understanding the logic behind English. It's the only way I stay sane.

Isn't it to do with vertical sync? It takes a while to record every line of pixels, so the tv show frame must have changed in between recording the tv and recording the desk. I've seen the same thing with lightning flashes and other mirrors.

What happens to the term sa when you expand the brackets? Does it have another m to cancel it out?

The right hand side consists of two terms: a fraction (x/m) and another term (sa) which is subtracted from the first term. Notice the second term is not part of the fraction and is not divided by m. Now when we multiply this group of terms ((x/m)-(sa)) by m, we multiply each of the terms individually, to give (mx/m)-(sam), so I don't understand your logic.

m*((x/m)-sa) simplifies to m*(x/m)-m*sa. The m is multiplied over both terms on the right hand side of the equation because it is subtracting (sa).
