Mulan didn't care about gender stereotypes. She went into war so her aging father wouldn't have to go. Not because of some need to prove girls could do what guys could. She didn't mind wearing dresses, she just didn't feel like getting dolled up to be a wife to some stranger was for her.
So the dress is totally her, she wore it at the beginning AND end of the film HAPPILY. What isn't her is the pink dress they have her wear in the parks because that's the scene where she's very uncomfortable.
