There's a short film called "Dive!" that deals with this topic.

I'd watch the shit out of that, especially if it was just Stan Lee going about his daily life. Like Chris Evans is his mailman, Paul Rudd bags his groceries while RDJ is seen mopping in the background, etc.

There's a difference between letting your kid do whatever they want and allowing them to make harmless decisions that make them happy. I wouldn't let my child have ice cream for dinner or run around the playground naked, but if my kid wanted to buy the blue shoes instead of the brown ones or wear a princess dress I'd let him. If your son saw a baseball cap he liked and asked you to buy it, you probably would, so why is a tiara any different? You're not bending to the whim of your child, you're just allowing them to wear what makes them happy

That isn't the fault of smartphones specifically. When I was young, if I was in the middle of a particularly absorbing book, I wouldn't put it down for anything, even to eat dinner. Kids ignoring their parents didn't begin with smartphones. And if parents want to converse with their kids, they should make a no phones at the table rule, and they should be interested and involved in their kids' lives.

People like to blame smartphones for our apparent lack of communication but humans have been ignoring each other for centuries. Televisions, books, newspapers, and even cave paintings have been used so people don't have to interact. This is nothing new.

The problem is that what a guy may see as a compliment, women perceive as a threat and it makes them feel vulnerable. There are good ways to compliment women you don't know, but catcalling isn't one of them.

Fun fact: False accusations account for about 2% of reported rapes, which is the same for pretty much every other crime. The "huge problem" we should start with should be unreported rape, since male victims of rape are less likely to report it. Good thing feminism is about protecting men and women (as well as everyone else)!

You're right. It absolutely should not have to take bravery to be yourself. But we live in a society that oppresses anything/anyone out of the perceived "norm" so we have to recognise those who have the courage to step outside of the "norm." Maybe someday we'll have a society that doesn't crush anything that's different, but in order to get to that place we have to realise that not everyone can fit in the same mould and that's fine because the mould is bullshit anyway.

Caitlyn Jenner is brave for showing the world who she really is and refusing to live a lie, thus making it slightly easier for transgender people everywhere. War veterans are brave for fighting for their country and coming back, possibly with injuries/PTSD, to limited recognition and support. Little kids fighting cancer are brave for refusing to give in to a terrible disease. Bravery is not a competition, and there are different kinds of bravery. The people in charge of the award probably wanted to show that bravery takes many forms.

The real statistic of male victims is about 40% of all domestic abuse cases, which is significant, but nowhere near "most." I don't know what you've been hearing, but people definitely give a damn about men's issues, especially feminists. Feminism is about stopping people from feeling inferior to anyone else. While many call it "the patriarchy" scathingly, we do live in a male-dominated society, and that hurts men as well as women. Society expects men to be tough and "manly," so it's difficult for male abuse victims to come out about it because they don't want to seem weak. Male abuse victims definitely are belittled, but it's by "the patriarchy" or whatever you want to call it. I'm sorry that you feel male victims are ignored, but there are people fighting for them.

Of course the book was not written with the intention of promoting abuse. However, it does contain abuse that is passed off as BDSM. So when women who are being abused by their men read the book or see the movie or hear about it in the media, they think: "Oh, he's not abusing me. It's just kinky. This is what other women want. I'm lucky to have my own Christian Grey. " And then they stay in abusive situations and that's horrible. And it's not entirely the book's fault; every time the media plays it off as just kinky or erotica instead of highlighting the questionable aspects, it contributes to the idea that it's just a harmless bit of fiction. People could use it to start normalizing abusive behavior, so it's not just a book.

That guy is John Boehner, the Speaker of the House and basically the most powerful Republican, which is why he mostly didn't applaud what Obama was saying. Also, he can't smile because all his time in tanning beds has given him a crispy exterior, making facial expressions difficult.

People are boycotting Annie? 14 comments

You're absolutely right; Annie's red hair and freckles were crucial to the original production. At the time, Irish immigrants in America were pretty unpopular, explaining why nobody would want to adopt a child with red hair like Annie. Nowadays, red hair is desirable and the original Annie would have no trouble getting adopted. So it makes sense to change her into a black girl because that's the kind of orphan that would be undesirable today.

Actually, cyanide is the one that smells like bitter almonds. Arsenic is usually odorless, although it can have a garlic-like smell in some forms.

The problem is that men already have the advantage in society and in the working world especially. Of course anyone should be able to do anything they want, regardless of gender, but often that isn't possible for women. Since we are starting with an uneven playing field, we're going to have to give more to girls than we do to boys, which seems unfair on the surface but it actually isn't. This post brings up an example of what we should be doing for young girls to bring them even with boys. Young boys don't have to be told that they can do anything they want because they actually can be/do anything they want in this current society and girls really can't.
TLDR; Sorry that as a male you're feeling left out, but that's necessary to fix the current gender gap in society.

True definition of Feminism 16 comments
unicycle

Because those who bash men in the name of feminism are NOT feminists. They are severely misinformed about the definition of feminism, and therefore cannot be grouped in with actual feminists. The "not all men" defense is invalid because the men who are "like that" are still men. Of course not every man hates women, not every man rapes and murders women who reject him, but when people use the "not all men" defense they're missing the point. The point is that some men are like that and that's the problem we should be dealing with, instead of avoiding it with weak responses like "not all men are like that."
