As a conspiracy hobbyist, I can say there's a variety of good ones. You've got your fake moon landing, 9/11 was a hoax, Atlantis exists, powerful world leaders are actually aliens in disguise, etc. My personal favourite right now is that Barack Obama is actually a clone of Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten. People have compared their facial structures and everything.

Before the actual questioning begins, you're asked a series of questions that are obviously true or false to establish a baseline i.e. "Is your name ___?" "Do you live at ___?" "Are you a unicorn?" So your nervousness would be established as your baseline and any changes would register as a lie. Even with this, lie detector tests are so unreliable they're hardly used anymore.

I was a teaching assistant and showed up before the professor. Started handing out pages covered in equations and formulae, realized from the horrified looks that I was not in the advanced astrophysics class, but rather the first year literature class. Pretty sure I scarred some of them for life.

You could be an extrovert with social anxiety! It's a bit of a bummer, like being Italian but allergic to tomatoes, but it does happen.

morganwinchester, I'm sympathetic to your struggle and I'm sorry for everything you've been through. However, not everyone who has an abortion is irresponsible or selfish. What could be more irresponsible than forcing someone to bring a child into the world when they don't have the means to care for it? What could be more selfish than expecting other people to put their bodies through hell and lives on hold for 9 months just so they can put their child in a system for adoption with the hope that they find a caring home?

Well I respect your opinion, but just because women in the world don't have babies doesn't mean we can stop other women from having abortions or forcing them to carry it to term and give it up for adoption. There are millions of starving children in the world, but I'm not going to stop feeding my children and sacrifice their food and health to give to starving children. You can't tell an abortion-seeking woman that she has to sacrifice her body and time and health so that another woman can eventually have her baby.

I just want to say that I'm pretty sure this tweet is referring to the hypocrisy of guys who don't want to use condoms yet think abortion is wrong. Other forms of birth control are often not available for many women, so denying them abortions for their "irresponsible choice" is just plain wrong. We've all made hundreds of poor decisions, but the majority of those don't carry a 9+month sentence.

Saying that one issue has priority in the feminist movement is like saying that one drop of water is at the very top of a wave in the ocean; there are so many different things going on in such a huge movement that different issues have different priorities for different people at different times. Some feminists have made catcalling and video games their priority, and that's fine, but that doesn't mean that the entire feminist movement is focusing on those issues and putting more severe issues on the back burner. Many feminists are crusading for issues of rape, education, etc so it's impossible to say that feminism is focusing on only one issue at any given time.

Sure but that doesn't make the entire modern feminist movement invalid. I'm sure there were plenty of feminists advocating for some stupid shit back in the 1910s too, but that didn't mean that feminism itself was wrong or stupid. And just because these issues aren't as vital as education for women or preventing violence against women doesn't mean we shouldn't examine why the majority of female video game armor is automatically sexy and impractical and why many video game makers cater exclusively to a male audience despite the vast and growing community of female gamers.

Look, I respect your opinion and recognise that I likely can't change it, but I hope you come to realize that egalitarianism = feminism. It's important to call it feminism even though feminists advocate for men and women's rights because it's largely the feminine things (i.e. a male rape victim seen as weak) that are put down by society as a whole. If you want to paint all modern feminists with the same brush I can't stop you, but you're dead wrong because there are so many different branches of feminism working on a wide variety of issues.

Feminism does deal with issues that effect men since the movement seeks to change larger societal ideals of masculinity and femininity. Feminism is about helping male rape and domestic abuse victims come forward because feminism seeks to undermine society's views of male victims as weak. Feminism is about helping deserving fathers get custody by undermining gender roles of women as primary caregivers. I'm really sorry that you think feminism is such a dirty word, and that the movement is swarmed by misandrist demons from the depths of tumblr but feminism doesn't only focus on women. Because real feminism recognizes that there are certain areas where women have an advantage, and it seeks to level the playing field for all.

Look, if you believe in equality and think that people should be judged for their actions not their gender, then you're a feminist whether you want to use that label or not. You keep harping on about "modern feminism" but it's clear that many people are judging feminism by some of its most extreme proponents, which is inaccurate. Maybe some western feminists want to talk about catcalling and the wage gap and emojis because those are the issues that they have everyday experience with and that many people can relate to. Just because those are the issues being talked about doesn't mean that modern feminists don't care about promoting women's education or stopping female genital mutilation around the world. Just like with every movement, there are some extreme outliers who are often the most vocal, but that shouldn't undermine the message of the majority.

Tarot, I'm not saying that these aren't problems being discussed by feminists; I'm saying that they are only a part of the vast issues that feminism seeks to remedy. These problems are mostly attributed to men because there is an overarching pattern of men's behaviour that many women have experienced and can connect to. Obviously women can be condescending, but the word "mansplaining" describes the larger pattern of behaviour that seems to be specific to men.

Here's why I disagree with you: first of all, you list problems that you claim are the "most frequently discussed" by feminists and then you try to pass them off as trivial bullshit. These things are not even close to the most discussed topics, but they're not trivial bullshit either. "Mansplaining" sounds silly, but is a very real thing and is indicative of larger societal ideas that women are somehow helpless; I can't tell you how many times I've had a man in the lab I worked in try to explain to me a concept I wrote my thesis on. Also, it's not "compliments are bad," it's "being shouted at while I'm walking home is degrading and scary." And I think there's a lot of misinformation on both sides about the wage gap so it's not really worth discussing without extensive use of sources. The point is that modern feminism, like feminism in the past, is multi-faceted; there have always been women seeking domination over men, but the vast majority of feminists are simply seeking equality.

Truthfully, I only read the headlines for the articles saying the police didn't find evidence for abuse, so maybe they saw the evidence but determined it wasn't enough for her allegations? I don't really know how the American police function for something like this. Also, I'm curious as to why you keep bringing up his mother's death? Because a traumatic event can lead to an outburst of violence, especially in someone with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, but I fail to see how it would be relevant to Heard making false accusations.

Here's a link to the pictures and testimony submitted to the court. The pictures show bruising on her face and her "trashed" home (my house looks like that on a regular basis tbh). I made my first comment based on a couple news reports I'd seen a few days ago, but doing this search brought up a bunch of links saying that police found no evidence of abuse when they were first called; so, now I'm not quite sure what's going on. Still, I don't think it's right to automatically assume she's doing all this for money.

I'm sorry but I think you two are dead wrong. Like she has photographic evidence, multiple witnesses (who tried to get her out of the situation), and a judge agreed that she had enough reason to grant her a restraining order. What more do you want? She did everything that a victim is supposed to do in an abusive situation, and yet you still think she's lying? I'm sorry, but rich and famous people that seem really likeable can be abusive too.

Everybody keep in mind that you can do this for anything; no matter how old you are or what your skill level is, you can become amazing with consistent effort. Natural talent is a myth, people who are truly great at something put work into it every day. No matter what it is (painting, math, a foreign language, fellatio, etc), consistent effort will make you more talented than you thought was possible.

As explained in the movie, his mask functions to narrow his focus, since his senses are so overloaded. When he's scared or surprised, the eyeholes get larger to take in more of the situation, just like your eyes do.

I've done some work in nursing homes and I can tell you that everyone I met was so happy to be there because they were able to let go of a lot of their worries. Like one woman wrote frequent letters to friends, and when she was living with her daughter she could never remember if she had sent the letters or not, but the nursing home she lives in now keeps track for her and helps her keep up. Maybe things are different in your country, but I've never met a patient who was just "dumped" in a nursing home.

One of the great things about the human mind 9 comments

Those quick judgements are great for deciding a chair is a chair, or that shape off in the trees looks like a tiger, but you have to understand that our first impressions are so often inaccurate. Our brains are taking an unbelievable amount of info in at any given time so we can't possibly be very accurate. So yeah, you're gonna make snap judgements of people, but ask yourself if that's the whole picture. Another drawback of the human mind is that we give much more weight to our first impressions than we should. No matter how much info we get later, we often get stuck on that initial assessment. So go out there and keep in mind that you're most likely wrong about people.
