The US actually has a law that protects food donors from lawsuits as long as the donations are made in reasonably good faith (called the Good Samaritan Act or something). Retailers like to use the possible threat of lawsuits as a cop-out for not donating food when the law is actually on their side.

For anyone interested: it was most likely a series of ramps and ropes operated by well-fed volunteer citizens (not slaves or aliens).

Letting everyone enjoy the right to get married is apparently a gateway drug murder, beastiality, and paedophilia.

As soon as you see your baby for the first time, you'd recognise it anywhere. Like yes, it's a lizard potato, but it's MY lizard potato.

Hitting a child doesn't teach them not to steal, it just teaches them not to get caught stealing. To actually change their behaviour it's best to try to understand why they're acting that way. Maybe they just want candy, and if you know that then you can have a conversation about whether you're going to buy the candy or not. Maybe you bargain with them and say that instead of buying them candy, you'll make cookies when you get home. Talking it out is always better than punishment, and you'll raise more conscientious, self-aware, emotionally mature kids.

I've never had to yell at or punish my son. I've certainly wanted to at times, but a child's "bad behaviour" isn't because they want to be bad - they're just trying to cope in their environment with the limited skills they have. Instead, each instance of misbehaviour is an opportunity for growth and learning if you try to understand the child's motives and reasoning.

I absolutely agree. Everyone should try to find out where their electricity is coming from, and if you're not happy with the answer then tell your government to start making changes. I know most people on this site are in the US, so here's a website that will tell you what sources contribute to the electricity you use. Just enter your zip code and service provider, and you can also compare providers to see if you want to switch your service. I'm also going to post a chat with this so it can reach as many people as possible.

Actually 90% of Sweden's electricity comes from renewable sources like nuclear, hydroelectric, and wind power.

It can be difficult to find that balance between what's best for you and what would help your family the most. I hope my children take my example of not staying in a toxic environment to heart because I think it's easy to forget to take care of yourself when you have others depending on you.

Ah okay, I think we're reading "depressing" two different ways here. I don't see the post as saying "If the thought of something makes you sad, don't do it." I think it's more about "if you see an activity as something that will be mentally/emotionally/physically/spiritually draining for as long as you're doing it, if the thought of it means you won't feel happiness again, don't do it." I was once finishing my doctorate, on the brink of entering a field that I knew would drain my happiness; even though I loved the subject, the actual workplace would have ruined me. In that case it was absolutely not a good idea to keep at it. Now, I work with people who have experienced trauma, which is often depressing but in a completely different way, and it is ultimately rewarding.

Why does "if the mere thought of it is depressing, don't devote your life to it" read as "don't pursue careers that are hard" to you? There's a huge difference between something that is challenging that you have to work at and something that drains your happiness and squashes your soul.

I realised in the last year of my doctorate that I had chosen the wrong field and I would be stuck for the rest of my life in a career that drained my soul. Every day I'm grateful that I found the courage to earn another degree in a completely different field, and now I'm working a fufilling job that I love. You're never stuck on a path; if you're unhappy, find the courage to make a change.

But...How 8 comments

It's usually not the organ damage that kills you; what kills you is the shock. When you receive a traumatic injury and go into shock, your body is pretty bad at staying alive. But, the extreme adrenaline in this case would have her body focused on staying alive instead of going into shock, and that would allow her to stay alive long enough for any organ damage to be repaired.

The worst part: that was actually our first romantic interaction/first time having sex and we were interrupted by my 15 YEAR OLD SISTER. It's funny now but we were all a bit scarred.

My youngest sister is deaf and usually she has a special knock that means we can't just shout through the door, we have to open it and tell her not to come in. Well, this time she was frantic and didn't use the special knock, so I assumed it was someone else and shouted "Give me a minute!" She obviously didn't hear, and opened the door to reveal me having very intense sex with a guy. He became my husband and my sister brings this up all the time.

Apply to those jobs anyway, even if you don't have the required experience. Hype up any and all experience that you do have (helping a friend study = private tutoring). Go in with confidence, ask questions, make them want to hire you. Most places will train you anyway so it doesn't matter what experience you have, sometimes you have to adjust the truth just enough to get your foot in the door.

OCD = Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Every human has obsessions and compulsions - it's normative. We all have unwanted, intrusive thoughts sometimes. We all perform impulsive behaviours sometimes. These become OCD when they significantly disrupt normal functioning - the key is the "Disorder" part. So someone with OCD may be troubled by this picture, but being troubled by this picture doesn't mean you have OCD.

"Cake on cake" is like too much of a good thing. Like when you try to improve something that was already good.
