Also all of the listed places are outdoors (excepting the rare free museum). Libraries allow people to get out of the elements and provide comfortable places to relax (it's hard to relax on a sidewalk or hiking trail).

Don't feed meat to pet rabbits! Their bodies can't process that much protein and they could die. Wild rabbits are a different species and their diets shouldn't be a guideline for your pet's. Cats can get meat snacks but not salami as it's too salty.

Is it really difficult for some men to believe women can be both smart and beautiful? 20 comments

I was working in a physics lab where it was about 20:1 men to women. I was the only woman in my department and if I wasn't angry, I wouldn't have made it at all. I needed the anger to keep fighting for my ideas and motivate myself. It was an incredibly shitty environment and being bitter and angry was the only justified response. Just brushing it off and keeping my head down wouldn't have gotten me anywhere and would've made me feel like crap every day when I got home.

How to spoil a herd of cats 10 comments
unicycle · 5 years ago
Wait, what? Cats were domesticated because they liked the shelter humans gave them but it's cruel and selfish to keep them indoors? Is it less cruel to let a cat get hit by a car? Or killed by foxes/wolves/coyotes? Or contract feline AIDS? Cats can get plenty of exercise and stimulation indoors, and not everyone lives in areas where it's safe to let cats outside.

So giving birth isn't very pleasant, but your brain is wired to forget most of the pain and suffering and mostly just remember the good bits. That's why women who are screaming "NEVER AGAIN!!!" while in labour often end up pregnant again a few years later (speaking from experience, lol).

What if I told you that someone can love and respect their parents while also criticising the attitudes many older folks hold about young people?
Non Meat side? Really? Go have your own cookout 5 comments

This gets posted a lot and every time it's a dick move. Someone asks if they can be accommodated and gets the most childish reply. If it was anything other than vegetarianism it'd be clear how ridiculous the reaction is. "Want to come to my cookout?" "I don't drink, will there be room in the cooler for my sodas?" "Lol, nvm, it's canceled."

If you're not writing your paper at the last minute, email the author of the article and ask them to send you a copy! We don't get any money when you pay to access a journal, and are elated when people contact us about our work!

He was Italian, and since he legitimately misheard the instructions his dish was judged as brisket and gravy instead. He made it to the next round.

It's a defense mechanism called displacement. When you can't act out your urges on the actual object of your aggression/desire/etc. you substitute someone/something else that won't have repercussions for you.

There are two kinds of English people:
1) Slap both hands on both knees simultaneously OR
2) Half stand up and slap/pat thighs as if checking pockets to make sure you're ready to leave
In both cases you must say "Right" or "Right, then" otherwise it's invalid.

My heart goes out to anyone who is suffering from depression 10 comments

It's great that you're better but "changing your life" isn't possible for everyone. Medications, counseling, exercise, and meditation can all be extremely helpful for some and ineffective for others, but it's dangerous to say that pills make depression worse.

You're absolutely right, and it's playing into the "useless husband/shrill wife" narrative that's perpetuated in straight couples in countless sitcoms and movies. Most people using this type of language don't even realise it because it's so ingrained.

Hey, I'm just happy that someone read my paper. You can spend years writing and you'd be lucky to get one email asking about it.

Off the top of my head: neither parent was a match, health problems that made their livers less viable, health conditions that could make surgery too risky, might've donated part of their liver already, etc. I think any of these are more likely than a parent not doing everything they can to save their sick child.

Sometimes people sign a word differently than you expect and they have to spell it out but mostly you can get the gist because grammar is set up differently from spoken languages. Unless they speak a different sign language, in which case you're screwed!

In case anyone is wondering, people have "accents" in signed languages too! Smooth or jerky movements, fast or slow, exaggerated or slight, etc.

There's a huge difference between "Your smile just brightened my day!" and "Ayy baby you'd be so much hotter if you smiled." For the second one, acting like a "bitter psycho" is probably justified.

Why can't we have both? More original female characters and known characters re-imagined as female. Remakes and reboots are the current style so why not make it interesting?

African American Vernacular English is a recognised dialect that follows specific grammatical rules and has been around for a long time. It's not slang or broken English.

I'd say a forearm tattoo would hurt but be tolerable for most people. What's more disconcerting than the pain is the sensation of needles vibrating and dragging across your skin. It's hard to compare it to anything else. The pain gets better after about 10 minutes so as long as you can stick that out you'll be fine.

Pretty much any female complaint that wasn't immediately physical (i.e. a broken arm) was labeled hysteria until Freud started actually talking to women and taking their problems seriously.
