Well he chose a damn nice guitar to borrow then. Fender Stratocasters are my favorite. Very distinctive tone. Used by John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton (and the list continues).

...The transmitter sends the signal carrying the sound to it's other half. From the receiver, the signal travels into the FX loop/amp head and cabinet and sometimes into a PA system for larger venues, but that's a different story...

It's usually not any longer than a foot or two, because it connects to a wireless transmitter that is normally attached to the strap or the guitarist's belt, as Mouthparts said earlier...

Alright y'all. Let me make this clear. I've been playing guitar for 6 years and have actually BUILT one. The sound from an electric guitar comes from the strings (obviously). The vibrations are then received by the pickups, which are special magnets with wire wrapped around them a few thousand times. (On Niall's Stratocaster, they're the 3 black things on the pickguard)...
