I read the book that this is based on recently. It's really interesting, much more philosophical, and actually the film is taking the piss out of the novel because the philosophies it presents are.. well, are often a bit unpleasant.

Years ago, I was staying with my girlfriend at her grandpa's house. We slept naked, and in the middle of the night someone tried to steal my car. Grandpa came bursting in to warn me; half-asleep, I tore the covers off and jumped out of bed pointing my dobber at the old man.
There's no forgetting an expression like the one on that poor man's face, it seems.
