As a teacher he was in a position of power and influence over his students and he abused that power to the point where he was a 13 year old's (Neville) biggest fear when there was creatures that sucked your soul out through your mouth right outside his door and a 'murderer' running around. He treated Harry terribly and got Lupin fired because of a teenage conflict, and mocked Hermione's appearance.
