While there were lots of true atrocities done to the native Americans by the settlers it is also true that the large majority of them died out from a plague years before Plymouth Rock was settled. If that hadn't been the case these settlers would have almost certainly been overwhelmed and destroyed as all previous ones had been.

There are some good theories, and known facts, like the wind can get up to 90mph at only 2 inches from the ground on the playa which makes wind almost certainly the motivator.
