There are people this doesn’t happen to? Hell, I used to end up solving difficult puzzle game levels in my sleep.

Isn’t the entire MCU basically one giant Charlie Foxtrot of aborted themes and reversed character development?

They’re totally a thing, and they’re getting better, but A) I’m told you can still pretty much tell and B) whoever gets one is committed to this change bc besides being largely irreversible, it’s a HUGE process that requires months of physical therapy stuff.

Yeah - I’m not in the “tell everyone you date immediately” crowd, but the point at which you’re interacting with each other’s genitals is the point at which your genitals do actually become each other’s business, no?

Ok, so less “sense of impending doom” than that certainty like with a kidney stone (before you know what’s going on) that the pain can’t be this bad without being a fatal injury.

Well, considering the movie was largely about needlessly suppressing emotions and how doing so weakens people...

Pssssst the effect disappears if you have depression or a similar mental illness. I’m perfectly aware I’m a solid 2.

I’m just gonna say Teenagers (usu but not exclusively girls) Who Have Taken On Roles And Responsibilities Usually Reserved For Older People And Are Over Your Shit is just kind of a recognizable genre across cultures.

The point at which we start debating who doesn’t have to be treated as human is the point at which we admit no one has human rights. If it’s up for a judgement call, anyone’s rights can be negated with the right argument.
And somebody better freakin’ earn it if they want me to show them deference.

I always end up having the problem of people not delineating when they mean respect as “treat like an authority figure” and when they mean respect as “treat like a human being.” The former is earned, the latter is required.

There’s a theory out that chihuahuas (and other small breeds) are often aggressive because they’re frequently not taken seriously and treated with little autonomy - we ignore the normal body language signals from them as “cute”- so they learn quickly that aggression is the only way to communicate discomfort.

*cough* so, uh.... if someone snores genuinely unusually loudly, like, realllly pressure their doctor for an explanation. My spouse used to be legendary for it. He still snores, but now it’s, like, a normal snore? Since the cancer’s been (mostly) removed.

Some of them do it non-voluntarily, for $1-2 an hour, and won’t even be considered eligible for the job once they’re released.

If it were the “larger men survive” thing, though, wouldn’t the effect primarily lag the war, rather than directly correlating, though?

Fun fact: you can also get this effect tech-free if you just stress out enough to experience severe depersonalization!

Alt speculation: stress alters female hormone balance during gestation and favors an androgenic environment, which would lead to a higher incidence of “male” XX development. Most people are never karyotyped and wouldn’t know if they were XX anyway.
