Sam's a pretty famous cat, but unfortunately his story doesn't line up very well.
For starters, none of the surviving members of Bismarck recall a cat being on board, nor are there any photos of him on board (although it's possible there were and they went down with the ship).
Next is the fact that HMS Cossack was not actually one of the ships engaged in rescuing survivors from Bismarck so the chances of her spotting and then stopping to pick up a random cat in the middle of the ocean are relatively low.
Later on when he's supposed to be rescued from a sinking HMS Ark Royal, the ship sank pretty slowly producing little wreckage while most of the crew were evacuated in good order, so if he was bored he probably would have been evacuated with the rest of the crew during the relatively calm evacuation.
Lastly, there's the fact that there are two different versions of "Unsinkable Sam," with one instance of him being a black and white cat, and the other being a slightly chonkier tabby.

I'd like to put a word in for the moment when a group plan culminates in Travis having to woo Matt live on stage in front of thousands of people. Not quite as adorkable as the other two moments, but the situation had Travis fidgeting up a thunderstorm.

The first series is pretty great, but the later series are where the meat of the story truly is. I'd say it's akin to how the Harry Potter books start out kinda childish and fantastical, but evolve into a much deeper, more mature story as time goes on.
By the second series they even learn how to worldbuild beyond the current book.

It's like Narnia single handedly manifested Turkish Delight into existence. Which it practically did for a lot of kids.

It's also worth considering if you send 50+ people on a year long voyage, even if you pick a bunch of ideal, healthy candidates, there are GOING to be some medical complications. That's literally unavoidable.
Between accidents, human error, human physiology, limited treatment options, and shear probability, someone will probably not make it there alive.

The way I thought it worked is venom potency is judged by how much a single dose could do. One dose would be measured as the average venom released during one bite or sting in a lab setting. In practice however, it's very likely that they will get thrown off or bitten or something before they can get that full dosage into a target (predator or prey), so whatever tiny amount they do get into them needs to be lethal. Therefor, while a full dose may be able to kill something like 40 adult humans, in practice it would only get out maybe 1/10 of that in an actual attack.
Still powerful, but makes more sense than hyper excessive evolution.

Aquatic Scuba Vampires (the aquatic part seems redundant) 7 comments

Interestingly, the vampires from Twilight actually come pretty close to this. Especially in Midnight Sun, and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, you see them basically just being "people" with supernatural abilities.
Things like, speed reading bookstores at a time, playing mega 8 board chess (and cheating with foresight), going on a "hiking" trip to the other side of the continent, etc.
The underwater thing comes up as well, but only in the context of using it to throw off trackers, or as a simple obstacle (see: the english channel).
