I feel like in 9 out of 10 stories Gaston would have been the hero.
Falls in love with quirky girl, quest to marry her, (ignore the locks-up-her-crazy-father bit), rallies town when she comes back with blatant trauma, (tries to) defeat monster previously holding her prisoner (losing life in the process)

Mister Rogers always said "I like you just the way you are," but never "you're perfect" which I think is the right way to go about it. It leaves room for improvement (which he always encouraged) while still being warm and fuzzy and all.
