The French vous in Spanish is vosotros, usted is not a person, but it is still used, kind of like the French on. Usted is, at least where I'm from, used sarcastically and often rude.

Usted can replace vosotros, as in you formal. similarly, ustedes replaces vosotros, as in you plural. This is just to make it simpler and stuff.
