The French vous in Spanish is vosotros, usted is not a person, but it is still used, kind of like the French on. Usted is, at least where I'm from, used sarcastically and often rude.

Vosotros is the plural of tu/vos. Usted is the formal of tu/vos. They are different things. In argentina usted is respectful, not rude. And in argentina we don't use vosotros but ustedes, i don't know if it's the same way in other countries...
