I remember watching this. He was eating the gummy vitamins as sweets for the bulk of his meals - as his mother was an immigrant who couldn't read English and thought that they were just normal sweets/candy - essentially consuming nothing but sugar and vitamins. As he was missing good fats, protein, and other nutrients his bones became weak. Then one day he took a tumble, put his hands out to break his fall, and shattered his arm bones
