You may have a point in saying they weren't very technologically advanced, but the point is it doesn't matter. They were probably very happy living their life as is, you can see it in some if the tribes within the amazon, that know about the rest of the modern world but still choose to live their traditional life. They don't need to be "saved".

My mum has a giant book which compiles all of the far side comics into one. I remember spending many hours as a kid flipping through it, I don't even know what my sense of humor would be like if a hadn't had that book.
