I very much agree with the bottom statement...
I think that in the current age of tumblr stuff, a good number of people are just claiming this for attention. Back in my day, you were supposed to fit in (cue grumpy old guy meme), but it seems these days that it's trendy to be different....
With that said, I'm sure there there are also a reasonable number of actual transgender people, and it sucks that the attention seekers only end up delegitimizing the real transgender issues.
Note that I have no data/idea about the spread between attention seekers and real transgenders, just that I'm sure there are "some" on both sides.

There was a commercial on TV a few years ago, can't remember what it was for, but there was a "sex and the city" looking group of middle aged women sitting outside at some Street cafe, and a male jogger goes by and stops at a light, he lifts his shirt to wipe his face and the women are talking about how hot he his. Then he lowers his shirt and turns around and they realize that he is the teenaged son of either one of them or one of their friends (can't remember...), then they act all embarrassed.
It was played for laughs, but can you imagine how creepy as fuck it would be if it was middle aged dudes and a teenaged girl?

The best thing I heard on this topic was from a retired air force colonel.
People would tell him how important his job was and how much it mattered, and he would always think (but not say out loud, he wasn't a jerk) "yeah, but if I skip work for a day, nobody will notice. If the garbage man skips work for a day, everybody complains"
