Its a somewhat common thing though.
An early 737 max flight spelled out "max" over the state of Washington.
A 787 endurance test flight drew a silhouette of itself over most of the US.
Not as hard as you'd think with modern gps equipment.
Still really neat though

To save y'all a google:
"He manned anti-aircraft guns during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, for which he had no training, and tended to the wounded. He was recognized by the Navy for his actions and awarded the Navy Cross."
Note that the Navy Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor, so that's actually a huge deal.
And apparently CVN-81 is going to be named after him.
