I believe one of the chemical compounds in marijuana stimulates hunger. It's used to help treat people who can't gain weight easily. I'm not sure the exact compound, but I know it's not THC (the chemical that gets you 'high')

There are multiple reasons why it is believed marijuana causes “munchies.” Canabanoids (one of the active compounds in marijuana asides THC) are naturally produced in the brain. The plant makes ones which mimic our own and bind to receptors in the brain. One effect of this is that scent is enhanced, and the desensitivization to repeated exposure to scent is decreased- almost eliminated. This could help us enjoy food more and be more attracted to it. Studies on mice support this theory. Further- THC acts on the dopamine system increasing pleasant feelings- like those we get from eating. Marijuana also stimulates production of the hunger hormone grhelin. In short- the way the canabanoids effect the brain essentially makes it think you’re starving- mimicking the signals sent when you’re deprived of food only amplified, and the dopamine increases and scent sensitivity reinforce the simple pleasure of eating- and eating when “starving.” So science has good theories but no one conclusion.
