Everyone looks at you weirdly because you've got to speak and move your hands to even cast the spell

with the cheating you'd have to get kinda specific with how you are cheating as there is already a spell in the edition that I run that cheats magically and its not a cantrip.
Also as dragonbaby said most spells require verbal and semantic components. Specifically all bard spells that i can think of require a verbal component.

Could I possibly argue that after my character uses it enough times and gets it 'infused in their mind', that it can then at least be cast silently in non combat?

there are specific abilities that allow you to cast spells without certain components. Also I can tell by the wording that you are reading from 5e source material. I run 3.5e

Depends on where you guys decide you want to start out. There is one region with black hooded magi running around pretty commonly and by extension running around with robe belts
