About a week ago I decided to go off my anxiety meds cold turkey. Not because I wanted to, but because it was causing my throat to burn and I was in immense pain. I stopped and so far I’ve been fine. Just tired and a bit nauseous at times. I also have been experiencing electric shocks throughout my body. These are minor and don’t occur that often. I told my parents about it and my mom (who is a nurse btw) freaked out and told me I should immediately speak to a doctor. It has been such a hassle with COVID to see anyone and my parents even tried taking me to the emergency room. I’m fed up with it and feel like I can’t make my own decisions. Please if anyone can, let me know if I am overreacting and need to see a doctor right away?

Which meds were you on?

Going off meds, particularly anxiety or anti depressants, cold turkey can have serious side effects and cause the anxiety or depression to become much worse. Trust your mom. She knows what she's doing as a nurse.
Also tell your doctor the problem you were having with them, as it sounds like an allergic reaction (in which case stopping was a good idea).

I agree with @riyriamistborn....
I understand not wanting to go to to the ER, but maybe you can set up a telehealth visit with your Dr to discuss side effects and possibly a new medication.
I think the “shocks” you’re experiencing are what are referred to as “brain zaps,” which from I’ve read can happen when you stop taking an anxiety medication. They don’t seem to be harmful.
More than anything, though, my concern is that cutting off your meds cold turkey could exacerbate your anxiety issue.

Anxiety meds are not one-size-fits-all, and sometimes it’s trial and error.
After you touch base with your dr that prescribed this medication, please try and see someone who specializes in the mental health field, like a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

I was on clomipramine. It was for my ocd. I noticed it getting much better and I no longer have such severe ocd like I used to. I understand what you guys are saying and thank you for your advice! I left the er and decided to schedule a telehealth meeting with my primary care dr instead. I didn’t even think of it being an allergic reaction. It had happened before, but the last few times I took it, it was unbearable.

I’ve done a similar thing when taking a prescription of an anti anxiety med combined with aderall because it was exasperating my depression, dissociation and i has swiftly pulled out over half my hair between visits to my doctor and was going to have to wait for an appointment. I experienced sweats, shakes, lightheaded ness and an irregular heart beat. Turns out I could have had a seizure or heart attack during that time and I just got lucky.
In short PLEASE check in with your doctor or keep taking your meds ESPECIALLY if they’re high dose.

Also turns out I was experiencing a very abnormal reaction to my meds and my doctor said she would have tapered me off them ASAP (but gradually) anyway. Lesson is I just should have been telling her about my issues much earlier and not just waiting between visits or quitting cold turkey. Also don’t taper yourself off meds without a consult. Dosage is important and they’ll tell you how to do in a what that doesn’t fuck you up.
