There are mats for saving jigsaws for later. Those are very handy as half finished jigsaws can easily loose pieces.
Every piece, except corner and side pieces, have four sides; two with tabs and two with slots. They can often be used to orient a piece correctly.
Start the puzzler by sorting the pieces by colour and by setting aside corner and side pieces.

Do the borders first

Here’s a real hack. Find someone already doing a puzzle and steal a piece. When they finish they will start looking around for the last missing piece. That’s when you walk up and put it in its place and take credit for finishing it.

Puzzle companies use a grid system to determine what piece goes where. This means if you lose a piece you can call the company and get a replacement sent!
