Blender is something I use ALL THE TIME, and EVERYONE should try it. It's free, it uses 3D, but it has a REALLY steep learning curve. You'll have to spend like a month with it before you truly get it. There's also Stykz, and while that's easier its only 2D and you can only use stick figures in the program.
