They have done studies that show that switching to dollar coins would save a great deal of money in the U.S. I would assume that a $5 coin wouldn't save quite as much, as there are far more 1 dollar bills than 5s, but paper dollars have a far shorter lifespan than coins, and just the reprinting costs could save millions a year.
