That, but It's also hard to adjust from Military life to Civvy Life. One day you're spending 18 hours holed up in a dirt hole being shot at by terrorists and trying not to die, and the next day you're back home and the wife is concerned what drapes would look best in the living room. It's also hard to not be with your family for years at a time, especially if because of your extensive military service, you've never had time to start a family, so when you come home, there's no one to be with.

Most people do, infact. The military will pay for your college tuition if you agree to serve in the military for 5 years. Quite smart, not stupid.
( All though, I did join the military because I had no idea what to go to University for. Doesn't make someone stupid because they didn't go to Uni/College.)
