This is because the Alt Right, a group notorious for its blatantly racist views and Nazi-ish rhetoric, uses Pepe the Frog as its mascot essentially. They say it captures their character or something like that.

Unfortunately, the singular pronoun "someone" needs a singular noun. So it would be grammatically incorrect to use "they". The English language is sexist.
