Iron man 1 mark II suit had to be put on with hydrolic arms and wasn't instant.
Iron man 3 as already said suit is more portable and can break apart.
In the comics his suits eventually becomes part of his body as in nanotech that's inside his bloodstream that can cover his body at anytime just by thinking called project extremis.
Think of ultron mixed with wolverine.
Also yeah the reactor is the power source you take that out its just a suit.
