Since middle school people have whined "but we'll never use this in real life!" Um, maybe YOU won't. Have fun working at your high school job for the rest of your life. Let those of us with potential learn the absolute basics of what we need to succeed.

Ray, a student ID isn't legal identification. A passport or state issued ID are valid photo identification, and a birth certificate also works if they don't require a photo. The post office employee was just doing their job.
