In most societies it was the norm for the son (eldest of more than one) to take on the role of caretaker and provider for his parents when they became too old. The reason it didn’t apply to the daughter was because she would have been moved to another mans family and would in all likelihood be taking care of his parents. SO to make my long af thing done they can’t have the only son (the only elderly caretaker) die in battle only to leave 2 old ppl who need help to their own devices and dragging down the society.
-cool side note is that the us had a similar policy where only men with brothers could serve in war-
