69 people shot in Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend 17 comments

Interestingly enough, Chicago has some of the strongest firearms laws around. So, how can there be so many gun murders,,since anti-gun laws prevent them?

Well, just in places that check IDs and only let citizens vote. Some places allow anyone to vote, non-citizens, the dead...

When someone commits a crime and says it was "in the name of Christianity," Christians and Christian clergy come out in force to comdemn the act itself and the attribution to the Christian God. They say how some act (abortion, homosexuality) might be a sin, but we're all sinners and any individual doesn't have the right or responsibility to murder or attack in the name of God. There's usuall nothing BUT condemnation from every direction from the Christians.

But when a Muslim murders or attacks in another way, there's no uproar from Muslim clergy. Sure, there's a huge swell of "don't blame all of us for the actions of a few," but very little condemnation of the act itself from Muslims, and none from the Imams.

Unfortunately, the Americans With Disabilities Act might require handles rather than knobs so they can be operated by elderly and others with weak grips or poor ability to rotate the hand. We've sown the seeds of our own destruction.

If he wore a $7k suit to give a speech about economic inequality, where the solution was to take from those who work to have "something" and thus pay taxes and give money to those who don't work and won't obtain the skills and work ethic to be employable, you might have a point.

Not necessarily. Obama's big appeal, was "you'll give me free, stuff and 'tax the rich' to pay for it." It's only much later you discover that "the rich" who earn, say, $250K aren't numerous enough to support all these goodies, and the real tax burden falls on what would. GLOBALLY be thought of as "rich" which is more like $34K. But 'til then, it sounds pretty good.

Did your ancestors immigrate here legally? Then you've got nothing to worry about.

Along with illegal I migrants, maybe we need to do something about those who can't tell the difference between wanting to not give benefits to illegal immigrants and hating all immigrants.

I worked with a young woman, about 24, who was very smart. Maybe that's a given that we were all"book smart" being all engineers. But she was always having to prove she was smarter than everyone else. I was talking about a series of sci fi books I was reading, and she was compelled to say she'd already read them, and any TRUE sci fi fan would prefer a different series. That pattern repeated in other ways with other people, i noticed.

So maybe, guys aren't as turned off by smart girls (or women) as much as by ones who have to continually one-up everyone else to prove that they're the smartest person in the room.

Remember when the Internet was new, and people discovered that they could animate jokes to show cartoons "saying" the speaking parts and acting things out? What a great way to make a 30 second joke into a two minute slogfest that was torture to get through. Same thing with this panel by panel "telling" of an old joke..

Why does "someone else" always have to change or I,please tell something *you* want? Disney should do xyz, some other company should do abc. If it's important, then do,it,yourself. Write a compelling and riveting story that movie companies would be nuts to NOT make into a movie. But for goodness sake, stop trying to make everyone else conform to your view of fairness.

McD's and BK aren't all that different, really. If,you want an "opposite side of the tracks" story, make it between a Chipotle and steakhouse loving carnivore and a Whole Foods shopping vegan. Make the vegan militant about it, too.

Who's starts the most wars and kills the most people? I'd say Europe. Now as the EEC and for a thousand years as individual countries, it's Europe...killing each other and colonizing their "inferiors."

This is actually a good point. It's too bad (for the Native Americans) that they didn't have the ability to resist or repel the invasion of Europeans. Had they been able to do so, they'd have been able to maintain their way of life, regardless of whether we think their way wasn't as good as what was being imposed in them. The parallel to now is that the USA *does* have the ability to resist and repel invasion from those who want to come to the US but make it more like the place theyre leaving as far as laws, culture etc. There's the ability, but not the will to do so. Being called "racist" by those who can't distinguish between legal and illegal immigration is too harsh. Being called "Islamophobic" is too severe a consequence to go against "refugees" who want to implement sharia law and make the US like the countries that they're "fleeing."

If a woman had it within her power to kill her rapist(s), why wouldn't she be able to stop the rape in the first place? Or is this trying to say she would kill the rapist(s) at some point after the crime?

Since it's so easy to "shoot the legs" of a perp to disable him, it makes ya' wonder why the Australian police hurt anyone at all. I mean, just shoot the gun or knife out of his hands, right? And that three bullet maximum...how nice of criminals to never rove in groups larger than three. Also, maybe Australians don't have a femoral artery, so leg shots aren't that dangerous.

Man, the things some people believe because they saw it on a cartoon or a 1950s western.

White people like to assuage their white guilt by sympathizing and going over the top in how terrible white people are/were, but I never see any of them giving anything back to the natives they feel were "robbed." They sometimes agitate for *other* people to fund reparations or some $#+.

I don't care for Girl Scout cookies. They taste...well..."ok," but the price per ounce is ridiculous. There are many better cookies at the store for much less per cookie. Plus, wth is it with the price? There's no store overhead or sales or delivery? The GS district gets some tiny amount of money. The cookie company must be raking in the dough.

Obama was in office when global economics caused the price of crude oil to go down, so some simpletons believe that "he lowered gas prices." Oddly enough, it's usually the same people who are pleased with lower gas prices who think there should be a carbon tax on fossil fuels to deter their use to "solve global warming."

Clinton was in office when the Internet first bloomed and there was a huge bump to the GDP thanks to companies replacing old equipment and software to deal with the Y2K issue. The Roth IRA was introduced, so many people converted their regular IRAs, paying taxes upfront to avoid taxes later. But Clinton somehow gets "credit" for increasing tax receipts by virtue of being in the White House when those things occurred, which weren't of his making.

Doing nothing? The Orlando school now requires clear backpacks and the wearing of IDs, which could have helped with what happened had those measures been in place. Those measures aren't whatDavod Hogg and the rest *wanted*, but confiscating and destroying all firearms is not going to happen.

As much as I dislike this so-called Westboro Baptist Church, physically preventing them from exercising their right to free speech bothers me as well. If We can justify preventing them from speaking their minds, then the next thing is, someone can prevent you or me from the same thing because they find what we say, even if it's true, offensive to them. Plus I think it's a good idea to get this Fred Phelps group faulty Opinions out into the light where It can be debunked and legitimately criticized, instead of sirpressed such that some people might wonder if there isn't something to the speech that you're trying to keep from being sad.

I am an older man, and I'm just imagining how much fun I'd have if I took my wife on a $500 date...both on the date and then afterwards. If I weren't married, I'll net I could find a woman who'd be a lot of fun on such a date, and wouldn't be a "pro," although she might just be "regular pretty" vs. arm candy. Honestly, I'd feel like a fool spending that kind of money on such a vapid gold digger.

The USA has so much more violence because you let in all those groups who use violence to,settle arguments and to increase their gangs' drug selling territories. It's easier to have cultural unity and peace when there's racial homogeneity.

HOW CAN PEOPLE NOT LOVE THIS MAN 22 comments
guest · 5 years ago
Well, he doubled the national debt, and made every racial incident worse instead of defusing them. He managed to get government to control more of health insurance--which might be good if there was a sustainable plan to pay for it--but kicked the can down the road for people in a few years to figure out. For a few key congressional votes, he allowed those congressional districts' states to be exempt from the health insurance law! If it's so good, why were they exempt from It? Bowing to foreign leaders and buckling under to other countries and the UN on many issues instead of putting US interests first are some more reasons to not care for him.
On the birth certificate, a US president *must* be a naturally born citizen. If I have to show a bunch of documentation to get a Real ID drivers license, why did Obama drag out showing his birth certificate to prove that he met the law to be eligible for the presidency?
If the world lost oxygen for 5 seconds 19 comments

"There would be giant insects" doesn't make sense because gravity would stay the same. An insect's leg or fang would increase in weight at the cube of the ratio of scaling (because its weight is proportional to volume) but its strength to lift that appendage would only go up with the square of the scaling (muscle cross sectional area). Regardless of oxygen, the forces at work on earth drive why it's most efficient for tiny creatures to be constructed one way and large ones to be completely different.

Same here , in high school. I discovered that it became less so in college, and much less the case later with friends I made at work, in church, and other activities. I think its because "friends" in high school are often same-age people forced to be in the same place. The "friendships" don't stick as much as with those you befriend later by choice rather than in HS because of proximity. Although, a few HS friends might stay in your life.
