There are quite a few benefits to the imperial units. Take the foot for example, you can divide it evenly into 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/6. Metric you can only divide into 1/2 or 1/5. The only reason metric is so popular is because so many other people use it and its all base 10, which is easy for dumb people to handle since they have 10 fingers.

That actually is why we (and several other countries that always get ignored) do month/day/year. People used to always write out the date, and although you may say "4th of July" nobody would ever write it out like that, its July 4th, 2014. Then people wanted to shorthand it, so they kept the same convention and it changed to 7/4/14
Women logic 8 comments

You can wear whatever you want, whether its uncomfortable as hell, super comfy, slutty, or whatever else you can think of. HOWEVER, what everybody else thinks/acts like/says to you because you are wearing said clothing and how you feel because of them is part of that clothing too. If you want to wear a shirt that barely covers yours tits, go for it. Just remember people are going to stare or call you a slut or whatever else. If that makes you so uncomfortable, maybe that outfit isn't as comfortable as you thought it was. You see women staring at guys abs or "massive bulges" and yet you don't see those guys bitching out the women staring. You know why? Because if the guys weren't comfortable with it, they wouldn't be wearing clothes that showed it off.

Well unless its a full bottle, there is SOME air in it. If it just needed air, the top layer of glue thats touching air would fully harden on you.
Most glues these days are dissolved into a chemical to stabilize them so the glue can't combine with itself to harden. When they are exposed, the solvent evaporates and the glue can harden. For example with modeling glue, if you have ever used it, you'll notice it has a strong acetone smell. Thats because acetone (nail polish remover) is the solvent in it and it is evaporating now that its outside the container, which allows the actual glue to bond. In regular white elmer's glue, the solvent is actually water. They did it with water so it would be "non-toxic" however water evaporates much slower, which is why elmer's glue takes so long to harden compared to most other glues.

Also, it DOES cost the business some to serve a water. Usually people want ice too, that cost some to keep supplied and cool. Has to be in a container of some sort, if its reusable that means it has to be washed, if its a plastic/paper cup that means they had to buy it. Usually people want lemon too, those cost something and also somebody has to spend time cutting them up.
The reason so many places offer it for free is because they want to keep the customers happy. Thats why most places that do charge for it only charge the 10-25 cents for the paper cup. Also most of those, if you argue enough and actually bought something from them too, will give it to you free. Because its not worth pissing off a customer and having them not leave a tip or making them not want to come back just to make that extra 10 cents. However, it is completely within their right to not serve tap water if they don't want to.

So after spending a while googling this "federal law" of yours.....I found nothing to do with any law in the US. I found a law in 1 area of Australia and 1 thing in the UK that stated some places that serve alcohol will have a clause in their liquor licence stating they must offer water to "combat binge drinking"
Seriously, can you imagine the hotdog stands in a stadium on a really hot July day being REQUIRED to serve free water to anybody that asked? They'd never be able to actually sell anything from all the people wanting free water instead of the $5 bottled waters. Not to mention most stands like that aren't hooked up to a water supply in the first place, yet they'd fit your statement of "any business or establishment that sells food of any kind"

Well its meant to be fairly safe. As you go up it bends some, so you are less likely to hit it as you are falling. It would (for the most part anyway) be used on sunny days, so the rubber grips should dry pretty fast between climbs anyway, but even if they were a little slick, that would be part of the climb. You don't put your weight on something if it won't support you. Something wet that your gonna slip off of would be one of those things you shouldn't be letting your weight rest on.
Only thing I could see people doing and hurting themselves too badly is if the pool isn't wide enough and somebody climbs to the top and pushes away as the jump off, they could go backwards too far and not land in water.

Technically, seeing the effects of something still isn't the same as physically seeing something. One could argue that even though you can't see God, you can see the effects of him through being able to see miracles. Whether they are right or not, or what you consider a miracle is besides the point. Just saying seeing the effects of something isn't the same as seeing it.
Also our atmosphere is not just blue air. Its the light from the sun scattering on all the molecules IN the air, not the air itself. Just as you shine a light through a clear prism and see a rainbow, it doesn't mean the prism itself is magically all the colors of the rainbow, its still clear.

@stonedmonkey because the bad advice one is meant to be fake good advice. Its SUPPOSED to look like good advice, thus its supposed to look like the good advice mallard. Kinda like the "did you know" posts that have fake facts on them, they are meant to be close enough to the truth that some people will believe it, but still wrong. It gets misused a lot as just bad advice though.

It would work of the seller was really trying to push the sale. Which would only really work if the buyer was pretty convincing. IE: Buyer comes in that has no intention of fixing up a car, he wants a good one. He talks to the seller a bit, "ya I like the color, the price seems decent on it, bla bla bla...only problem is my buddies and I are into fixing up cars, I'm really looking more for something that we could all work on together" This would lead the seller into wanting to close the deal so they'd emphasize the problems with it.
People do it all the time when selling stuff, emphasize what the buyer likes, minimize their dislikes. "Oh you dont like that color? Well I mean, it wouldnt be too hard to repaint it, and it does have all these other features you said you really liked, remember?"
"Oh you think the mpg is kinda low? Well that is with me starting it and letting it run every morning and then only city driving, Its a lot higher on the highway."

guest · 9 years ago
You can't say its a problem because its just been expected of women to do certain things since the dawn of time. Just as its "expected" of women to cook and clean the house or whatever other thing you think is expected of you, its expected of men to maintain the yard, keep the house/vehicles/appliances/etc. in working condition, be the "breadwinner" of the family, and so on. All those things have been expected of men "since the dawn of time" too. Thats not sexist, thats preconceived notions of who should do what job.
Not saying that women aren't oppressed to some degree, just saying that shouldn't be your reasoning for it.

Not the same guest, but how the hell is murdering a baby "OK" dark humor, and yet smacking a woman is just tasteless? Its a joke, just like rape jokes, abortion jokes, dead baby jokes, child abuse, or whatever other dark humor joke. None are "better" than the other and of course none of them are serious, thats why its called a joke.
.
And as to your close family/friends vs public internet, when somebody in person tells you a joke, you have to respond to it whether you liked it or not. Whether that means an actual laugh, a fake laugh, a blank stare, or telling them you didn't think it was funny, you HAVE to respond to it in some way. On the internet, you don't have to respond. You can just keep right on scrolling if you don't like it and nobody's the wiser. Thats why people like to post dark humor on the internet.

I remember my music teacher that pushed me to try it out even though I thought playing an instrument was dumb and ended up gaining a love for music. I remember my high school English teacher, that at the time I always thought was a bitch, that constantly pushed me to do better because she knew I could. My Science teacher, that kept pestering me to join several "nerdy" clubs that I felt too lazy to join and ended up loving.
You shouldn't keep remembering the shitty people that obviously didn't care about you. Remember the ones that did, and took that extra effort to help you, even if it meant more work for them.

Also, and I know I'm not alone in this as I saw lots of similar comments, this is by no means representative of the entire American public education system. Throughout my entire schooling, I never had a teacher that I would rank as low as most the ones in the post. I've had a few lazy ones that talk about their personal life more than teach, and a few strict/dumbass ones that would mark me wrong for "cheating" on math for not using a calculator or not showing my work how they thought it should be solved. But you know what? I barely remember those teachers. You know which ones I do remember? My 3rd grade teacher that saw my copy of The Hobbit in my backpack and excitedly talked to me about it and ended up giving me their copies of LotR so I could read them when I finished The hobbit. I remember my 6th grade teacher that would do the extra work to hand write a separate page of math problems that were harder because she knew I was bored out of my mind doing the stuff the other kids did.

This isn't an issue with the school system being bad, its an issue with specific teachers being horrible, lazy ass, shitty teachers. They don't want to have to teach multiple things, or deal with extra work, so they want every kid working on the same thing. Think about it, if they are all doing the exact same thing, its less work for the teacher to produce pages of stuff to work on, less explaining the subject, easier to grade since its all the same. They just don't care and want it as easy as possible. Now if you want to go into how things like tenure are ruining the American school system, I wholeheartedly agree. You want to know why that lazy ass, shitty teacher thats stifling kids educations is still a teacher and not fired? Because they have tenure and have to do something "bad" to get fired, otherwise they can keep half assing it, stifling kids learning until they finally get old enough to retire.

Just because its the hardest or most complex, wouldn't necessarily make it the "best" anyway. I wouldn't consider this anything like being told to stop reading or stop practicing things at home, even though it made you sad that it wasn't picked. Sounds like the rest of the class had to solve those problems and it wouldn't have made sense for him to pick one out way too advanced for the rest of the class. He sounds like a good teacher to me.

Because you are "missing out" on one of the largest portions of learning there is, Social interactions. You might (I hope anyway) have a few friends as a homeschooler, but you don't have the constant interaction with friends, non-family teachers, upperclassmen, lowerclassmen, enemies, etc. So later in life, you might know more about 18th century architecture than that publicschooler, but you won't know as much about how to network and talk to people. Then you'll be mad when that kid gets the job you were both applying for and you'll decide its because everybody hates intelligent people and the government/school system/big business is trying to dumb everybody down. When in reality, that kid just knew how to interact with people. Knew how to cover up his weaknesses and show off his strengths. You can learn these things later in life, but most people learn them during school, so in that respect, you are behind.

Keep seeing Norway as such a good comparison against the entire US. Population of Norway: 5 million, population of US: 320 million. thats 64 times larger. That means for every killing spree somebody commits in Norway, there has to be SIXTY FOUR killing sprees in the US to compare to it. If Norway had only one every 10 years (No idea what it is in reality, just an example) The US could average SIX EVERY YEAR and it would still be considered less killing sprees per person. The only reason you hear so much about the ones in America and not the rest of the world is because American news sensationalizes everything.

If you bothered to actually read what I said rather than glance at it and see it was a rant, you'd see that I specifically went into the price he was bitching about. Employers dont give a rats ass whether you went to university A with a price tag of $40k a year, or university B with a price tag of $4k a year. The ONLY time an employer will care whatsover, is if they are an alumni there, or its an extremely prestigious school (Think Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc.). This means that if you decide you have to go to that fancy private school thats so good, yet not quite good enough to be considered a top school, YOU ARE PAYING TOO MUCH. Nobody other than the other people that went to that school give a shit. So YOU and YOU ALONE are paying that extra $36k (in this example) to go to university A instead of B. So the only person you should be complaining to, is yourself. YOU chose to go there. The university didn't force you come, or to stay. YOU chose it.

It was a completely shitty thing what those cops did, and there are a LOT of cops that do this kind of thing (Cops shooting people in NM comes to mind). I get part of the reason for them doing it, adrenaline and the constant potential for bad things to happen if they let their guard down and whatever else, but it doesn't excuse them to do whatever they want. That being said, suing the state isn't going to fix anything. Its not directly punishing the people that did something wrong, its punishing everybody else. In fact, it probably makes it even worse. Now the budget is that much less, which means they have to make it up. That means their superiors are going to be on them that much more to pull people over and make arrests, because thats how they generate money. More pressure for arrests and tickets means more they are more likely to do something wrong such as this.
And I thought I had a bad day 34 comments
guest · 9 years ago
You are right about what punitive damages are, they are meant to punish the person that did something wrong. Suing the state for $40 million doesn't punish the wrongdoers. Sure, they are probably gonna lose their jobs if it goes through, but they aren't gonna be paying that $40 million. Everybody else in the state is hurt and paying for that instead.
Its like if you had a big group of little kids playing with a ball, and then 1 kid that wasn't really playing came over and kicks the ball in the road. So you "punish him" by taking the ball away from everybody to show what a bad thing he did. The problem is he wasn't really playing with it so it barely affects him, and yet the large group that WAS using it, are now punished for it.

Honestly, yes I believe suicide is a sign of weakness. Bad things happen to lots of people, its one of the most selfish things a person can do because it doesn't just effect them. The guys life obviously wasn't THAT bad, he had partner, he had kid, who gives a shit what random people he didnt know thought? Yet he cared more about the fact that random shitheads were mean to him, than he did about his partner and child, otherwise he wouldn't have left them. He completely abandoned both of them, FOREVER, because he couldn't deal with it anymore. So yes, in my opinion suicide is the most cowardly, selfish, sign of weakness there is.

So....your arguing about her changing camera phones, bottoms, and fixing her hair when it LITERALLY said thats what she was changing. It doesn't look like its from weeks apart. It looks like she stopped slouching, put on bottoms that fit better, did her hair (and possibly a bit of makeup) and cleaned her counter enough that it doesnt show crap on the picture. ALL of those things have a huge effect on how people perceive you. If you still don't think its true, go on youtube, I'm sure there are some videos of people doing it in front of a camera so you know its not weeks apart.

Delivery guy logic 5 comments
guest · 9 years ago
Ya.....this has absolutely nothing to do with the delivery guy. He (or she) doesn't open your package to find out what is inside so they can pick and choose what people have to sign for. The sender picks whether they want to require a signature or not, and the delivery guy just follows orders. If that $1000 box doesn't require a signature, they aren't gonna hold it til they can get one. If that $2 box requires a signature, they will hold it until they get one.
.
Now, if its something like the other guest wrote and the guy just flat out forgot to put the package on the truck, thats something else entirely. Although that sounds kinda iffy unless it was a guaranteed delivery thing. I'd assume they wouldn't even stop at all and just tell you it didn't come in til the next day, rather than risk you catching them and having to explain themselves.

To be fair, he kinda contradicts himself so it is technically wrong. He said yes, Quinton is correct that there must be 7 family members, and then he goes on to explain exactly how there could be more than 7 since not everybody always has 2 legs.
You could say "Hes correct because people have 2 legs so 14/2=7" or you could say "He could be incorrect because some people don't have 2 legs so it could be more than 7 people" Either answer would work, but combining them both would not.

So, every guy (or girl) that wants more of a relationship with somebody automatically "wants to get laid" or "just wants to bone them"? What kind of horse shit is that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be more than friends with somebody and it in no way means that they just want sex. If they end up getting put in the "friend zone" then they didn't achieve what they wanted to begin with. Why wouldn't they be mad/disgruntled/sad/disappointed/etc. when they didn't get what they wanted?
No, it doesn't mean they can talk crap about the girl (or guy) because they didn't like em back. It also doesn't mean that they deserve shit for not wanting to be in the friend zone.

@juliaaaa factorials are used to find combinations of things. As an example, say you wanted to find out how many different ways you could arrange the numbers 1 2 and 3. There are 3 different numbers, so you could just do 3! (3 * 2 * 1) and find out its 6. Or you could do it the long way and write them all out, 123, 132, 213, 231, 312, 321. If you add one more number onto it (1234) it increases the number of combinations to 24 different ones, 5 numbers makes it 120 combinations, and so on. Its also used some in more advanced mathematics too, but thats the most common one, especially when learning it in school.

He can A: Realize he really probably shouldn't continue working on his locomotive firer degree and maybe find something else he might like that deals with trains. Maybe he'll become an engineer and design/build tracks for trains or something. He does this, finds a good job and makes a decent living.
Or option B: He can deny the facts he looked up and keep telling himself he's special and it'll be different for him, he'll totally be able to get a job right away, especially since *University most people have never even heard of* has such good degrees! He continues on his path and stays unemployed for years, because not only is it a very small profession with little amount of new people entering, but its also declining! Which means it just gets harder every year because more people are fighting for even less jobs. He stays unemployed and ends up living with his parents and writing letters to his evil university that has the gall to ask its alumni for money.
Now, what should Bob do....

Also gotta look at what he got his degree in, as that could be a large part of the issue. Got a masters degree and still unemployed for 2 years? Either he's too stubborn and proud to start out at entry level jobs in his profession, or his degree is in something that just has very little jobs available. Lot of professions either have very few in the profession, or are a shrinking industry and less and less people are needed in it. Either way its very easy to look it up beforehand so this guy probably had full knowledge that he would have a very hard time getting a job.
Example: Bob really loves trains. He decides he wants to be a locomotive firer so he goes to college to get a degree and learn more about it. While he's there, he learns that not only are there only a couple thousand locomotive firers in the entire US, but its also a rapidly declining job! The number of people in the field is expected to drop over 40% in the next 10 years. Now, Bob has a few choices:

As funny as this was, this guy is just passing the blame back onto his school rather than accepting that much of it was his own damn fault. Yes, college can be very expensive, but let me tell you what 95% of your potential employers are going to look for. Did you get a bachelor's degree (or higher if required)? If yes, was the degree from *insert top 3-5 schools in this profession*? If yes, they'll add a bit of weight to it, if its ANY OTHER SCHOOL, its all the same and they don't give a shit which one it was. So unless your degree says Harvard or Yale or MIT or one of the other VERY top schools, you are probably overpaying if you are going to some private college for 40K a year when there is probably several state colleges nearby that you coulda been paying 1/10th of that. The money still adds up, but its much easier to pay 16k back than it is to ever pay off 160k.

cutting hours is usually the exact thing that happens to most employees that fall under the minimum wage category. Wages are a large part of most business's expenses, so it has to be made up somehow. This means they can either raise their prices, which they are very reluctant to do because of competition with other companies and it would make consumers mad, they can lay employees off, which they don't want to do because then the employee goes and gets unemployment benefits, they can skimp out on their product, smaller portions or cheaper products, which they don't want to do because again, it makes the consumers mad, OR they can cut hours on employees until they reduce expenses enough or enough employees quit due to not being able to work enough. Which do you think they are gonna pick?
